Types of green roof
Different projects require different systems, that’s why we offer solutions suitable for a broad range of structures, loading capacities, maintenance regimes and performance requirements.
The main types of green roof system are:
Extensive green roofs
Lightweight, low-maintenance systems typically planted with drought-tolerant species such as sedum, moss and native wildflowers. Extensive systems require minimal substrate depth and are well suited to roofs with limited structural capacity. They deliver strong biodiversity and rainwater management performance with low ongoing maintenance demands.
Intensive green roofs
Intensive green roofs support a substantial planted landscape, including grasses, perennials, shrubs and, in some cases, trees. These systems require greater substrate depth and structural capacity but deliver significant amenity, ecological and biodiversity value. They are often incorporated into roof terraces and accessible green spaces.
Semi-intensive green roofs
Semi-intensive systems offer greater planting diversity than extensive roofs while remaining more manageable than fully intensive installations. A wider range of grasses, herbs and low-growing perennials can be accommodated, increasing ecological value and visual interest.
Modular green roofs
Pre-grown or pre-assembled modular systems provide faster installation and simplified maintenance compared to built-up systems. Individual cassettes or trays can be installed quickly and replaced or removed independently, making modular systems particularly suitable for retrofit projects, constrained access situations and smaller roof areas.
