Tree Pits
Designed to store and release water to plants in a highly efficient manner, ensuring optimal hydration and nourishment for plant growth and sustainability.
Pollution filtration
An effective method of filtering runoff from roads or paved areas
Standalone solution
A sustainable solution for buffering, storing and irrigating, without impacting sewers
Root resistant
The geotextile membrane wrap resists root growth
Supports tree health
Water that is stored in the blocks is released to trees when required, optimising green spaces
Buffers street-level water
Natural solution
Infiltrates and irrigates
Hydrorock tree pits help to minimise urban flood risk by controlling and attenuating surface water runoff. Effective in high rainfall events, they store water locally then release it as and when needed by the trees, protecting the sewage and drainage network.
- A natural way to sustainably buffer, store and irrigate
- Effective filtration of road runoff
- Uncompromised by root growth
- Capillary action enables slow release of water for tree irrigation
- Options available for urban load-bearing scenarios
- Straightforward, quick installation
- 95% absorption to volume ratio
- Natural material
- Recyclable
- Minimal excavation
- Compatible with other Hydrorock infiltration and filter drain systems
Design detailing
These intelligent and versatile tree pits are suitable for varied site conditions, different numbers, species and spacings of trees, a range of local rainfall event requirements, amongst other criteria.
The diagram below shows a typical configuration for stand-alone tree pits in an urban location with non-vehicular load-bearing requirements.

In the each sub-array, three or four BD 340 blocks were used at a depth of 1300mm. These were arranged to the side of the tree under the existing parking spaces, with another block directly in front of the tree. The blocks were connected to ensure fast filling of the sub-array.
The system caused minimal disruption during installation and is maintenance-free, post installation.

Products
Our natural aquifer blocks are available to provide 100% sustainable, 100% recyclable water management solutions.
Installation
Installation is very simple and quick with minimal disruption. Blocks are pre-wrapped with filter membrane, so the excavation needs to be only as large as the system (no access is required to fit the membrane).
- No specialist installation engineering or equipment is needed, with simple snap-together fittings.
- Blocks are typically laid in a module three blocks wide. This enables the system to self-vent, and should the filters be compromised by human error, the entire system can be flushed.
- Perforated pipes that are integrated within the BD blocks allow rapid water inflow and storage in each block, underground.
- Extra capacity can be added quicky and easily with the installation of further blocks.
- Unlike crated sumps, Hydrorock systems offer the flexibility to be fitted around existing infrastructure, such as pipes and cable, for total site optimisation.
- Laying the system on a 100mm layer of sand will enable infiltration from the module into the surrounding soil, allowing the water to slowly flow from the aquifer blocks.
